There are some big laughs in "Home Alone," once it finally gets down to the reason for its existence — a lengthy, very funny slapstick sequence with a young boy setting all kinds of elaborate booby traps for two burglars who are trying to break into his house.

When the power goes out overnight the alarms don't go off the next morning, and in the rush to get to the airport, Kevin, sleeping alone in the attic, is overlooked.

Movie review: 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1'

Much of the plot of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" involves the attempt to find and destroy a series of Horcruxes, and if you hen't a clue about what they are or why they're important, you might as well stay home.

There is something different, however, about this Potter movie, and that is the words "Part 1" that end the title. You don't make $5.7 billion in theatrical revenue, however, by being calier about your source material and the watchword for the "Potter" series in general, and this film in particular, is making the audience feel like it's in safe hands.

Though adventurous filmmakers like Alfonso Cuarón he made "Potter" films, Did Yates, who directed the two previous epics as well as both installments of "Deathly Hallows," is not one of them.

Capable and dependable, he can be counted on to make solid albeit unsurprising films that believe in connecting the dots rather than creating risky excitement. When studio president Alan Horn said his priority for the series was treating the books "respectfully," he wasn't kidding.

Being respectful also means making sure you he quality people behind the camera (Steve Kloves has written almost all the screenplays and the new cinematographer is Oscar-nominated "Girl With a Pearl Earring" veteran Eduardo Serra) as well as top acting talent in front of it. Seen as a companion piece to director Darren Aronofsky's critical hit The Wrestler, Black Swan is his love-letter to the operatic world of ballet. Similar to The Wrestler, this is a psychological study of a loyal servant to a chosen profession, who are pushed to the limits both physically and psychologically by the pressures of being good and relevant to their craft.

The performances are excellent, namely Portman. She is in practically every scene and is every bit as good as you've most likely heard. Her transformation from the sweet, dedicated Nina of the first half to the desperate, troubled one of the second is wholly convincing, and that is down to Portman's acting ability. The scene in the cubicle when she calls her mother to tell her she got the part perfectly captures Nina's joy mixed with utter disbelief and confusion. She's always been a very good actress, but apart from 2004's Closer, she's never really been given a role she can really chew on. Here she chews with aplomb. Like I stated in a previous post, I would not begrudge her the Oscar if she beats my hopeful Jennifer Lawrence for Winter's Bone.

Black Swan is a very well-made film with amazing scenes of ballet, powerful acting and loose, confrontational camera-work, similar to that of The Wrestler. I just wish Aronofsky had been a bit more original with the horror scenes and offered something genuinely tormenting, similar to what he did with Requiem For A Dream. Probably not for ballet-buffs either, unless you also enjoy scenes of fingernail removal and masturbation.

That would be Martin Lawrence， a suburban Chicago police chief and doting father who insists on escorting Ren-Symone and crashing the "College Road Trip" of her dreams.

In this G-rated family comedy from Disney， the Chief's most compelling criterion for his precious baby's college is minimal distance from home. Northwestern， just 40 miles away， would be perfect in his opinion.

Georgetown would be perfect in hers. The deal is， they'll visit both places， with a stop at Grandma's in Pittsburgh inbetween. But the Chief is accident-prone， not to mention slapstick-prone， so things don't go as planned.

For one thing， her genius kid brother （Eshaya Draper） and his genius pet pig Albert （as in Einstein） he stowed away in the trunk. Melanie's excess baggage thus includes not only her dad but her bro and a porker.

The Chief hates Albert （"He keeps eyeing me！"）， but the pig knows how to play chess and work a Rubik's cube. He is at his best， during the trip， when high-wired on caffeine， wreaking hoc at an ethnic wedding and otherwise contributing to the mobile misadventures.

This is， after all， a quasi-road comedy —— shades of "RV" and "Wild Hogs." One would not call the humor sophisticated. Director Roger Kumble and his scriptwriters he Lawrence hiding under a sorority-house bed and doing some impromptu skydiving with Ren. People get tasered a lot —— tasering， the new hilarity.

But at least Lawrence plays a relatively normal， semi-believable guy here， as opposed to the bulk of his bad boys and Big Mommas of the past.

Ren， for her part， doesn't remotely resemble a high school girl， but she does a mean "Double Dutch Bus" and she's —— well， "So Ren，" constantly screaming with her constantly screaming girlfriends.
